Tractor gathering peat, County Kerry
This peat co-op member rents a certain large square meter area of the peat bog here for $250 per year. The co-op comes and cuts his rented bog into multiple foot-long chunks of peat. He must do the collection. He takes his booty home, spreads it out in his barn to dry, and burns it. He can heat his entire house through the winter for only that $250 rental fee.
I was standing in the hopper at the rear of the tractor as we bumped over the turned ground, hanging on for dear life with one hand and shooting with the other.
