Magellan referred to the natives of this area as "Patagao" or "Patagoni". He described them as being giants, whose waists were at the level of his head. The reports were confirmed by Sir Francis Drake and others. It is unclear where Magellan got this name for the natives, and Pagagonia has often been translated at "land of the big feet", though this is probably an erroneous translation. The area spreads over almost half of Chile and Argentina.
